BEKASI, Indonesia – Alhamdulillah, the number of Muslims in Papua is rising, on Sunday (19/2/2012) the chief of the Asmat tribe and his family declared the shahadah to embrace Islam. The chief of the Asmat tribe, named Sinansius Kayimpter, along with his wife, Agnes Atem and son, Ruben Siwir declared their shahadah at Masjid Darussalam, Jati Bening, Bekasi.

The solemn ceremony was assisted by Ustadz Fadhlan Garamatan and the Imam of Masjid Istiqlal, Ali Hanayiah. The process of the pledge was so poignant, with a stammer, Sinansius pronounced the two kalimah of shahadah. Followed by his wife, Agnes and his son, Ruben. For Ruben, he had difficulty in uttering smoothly the two kalimah of shahadah. Due to being so touched perhaps, Ruben could not withhold himself from crying. He then had to pause from uttering the two kalimah of shahadah.

After the shahadah, the congregation right away cried the kalimah of takbir “Alhamdulillah Allahu Akbar,” and the three people from the Asmat tribe decided to change their names. Sinansius changed his name to Umar Abdullah Kayimter, his wife changed her name to Aisyah Khaerunissa Atem and their son becomes Salim Abdullah Siwir.

After the declaration of the two kalimah of shahadah was done, the ceremony was followed by the signing of the certificate of conversion to Islam. The ceremony was closed with the granting of gifts for Mu'alafs (new Muslims) and three Umrah tickets from Masjid Darussalam's Council of Welfare jama'ah.

According to Ustadz Fadlan, to this day, about 221 tribes in Papua have embraced Islam. The number of citizens in each tribe varies, ranging from hundreds to thousands. If averaged out to a thousand for each tribe, then the hard work of Ustadz Fadlan has already Islamized 220 thousands people in the rural of Papua. Subhanallah!

Re-marriage

After the announcement of the change of names, the event was continued with re-marrying Umar with his wife. It was done in order to solidify the intention of both partners to become a Muslim couple.

The Imam of Masjid Istiqlal, Ali Hanafiyah then acted as the wali hakim (magistrate guardian) of Aisyah, receiving the ijab Kabul (marriage covenant) from Umar. The atmosphere was so solemn. Proud smiles continued to be seen on Umar's face. Especially that the wali nikah (marriage guardian) and the jama'ah pronounced the marriage as “sah (valid)”.

“Insha Allah, by being re-married, the hope is that this family will become a Muslim family that always obtain the ridha (pleasure) of Allah SWT,” Ali said.

His Son Already A Huffaz (Memorizer of Qur'an)

Umar's son, Muhammad Hatta decided to embrace Islam a few years ago and now that of his son has become a Huffaz (Memorizer of Qur'an).

It was from there that Umar notices changes when someone embraces Islam. “In the former faith, there had been no change on him. But after embracing Islam, there were noticeable changes, like the many young Asmat people who study outside of their territory,” Fadhlan said.

Due to that, Fadhlan is optimistic that the shi'ar (symbols) of Islam in East Indonesia, or in Papua to be exact, will continue to grow. He believes that Papua will become the centre of Islamic development in East Indonesia.

“Actually it not easy for us to exercise the activity of da'wah. The presence of rejection is natural. As a da'ie, barriers and obstacles of any kind are to be faced with tolerations, da'wah must be managed well. Insha Allah, the result would also be well,” he said.

Looking ahead, Fadhlan said that the people of the Asmat tribe themselves will play the important role in developing the shi'ar of Islam. Currently, there are 20 youths who are studying Qur'an in Demak and Yogyakarta. When they have completed, they will share the task to continue da'wah that has been exercised over the years.

“There is always a challenge. But nothing to fear, Allah SWT is with those who have noble intentions. Our task is still a long way ahead,” he concluded.

Needing the Guidance and Attention of the Ummah

Ali Hanafiyah said that from the 1980's, there had people from the Asmat tribe who embraced Islam. However, the absence of mentors, as though made the Muslim Asmats neglected.

“Those people embraced Islam and then received the news coverage from the media. But after that, there was no on-going guidance, as a result they did not live Islam in kaffah,” Ali said in his advice to the family of Umar who has just declared the shahadah at Masjid Darussalam.

Ali said that it is the responsibility of the Muslims to collectively provide attention and guidance to the Muslim Asmats. The Muslims must follow the example of the Prophet SAW when educating the sahabahs such as Abu Bakar, Umar bin Khattab and Uthman bin Affan.

“The Prophet SAW Islamized the city of Makkah by approaching the leaders of the tribes of the city. And then he shaped Makkah into the Centre of the propagation of Islam,” Ali said.

Therefore, according to Ali, soon the tribe of Asmat can become the central propagators of Islam in Papua. He believes that the entrance of Islam into Papua will bring changes in the region. “We will make Papua become more dignified,” he said.

Chief of Asmat Tribe Ready to Propagate Islam in Papua

Sinansius Kayimter AKA Umar Abdullah Kayimter admitted that he is ready to spread the risaalah (message) of Islam to his clans from amongst the Asmat tribe.

For that, he will, without delay, get to know Islam up-close and personal. “I will try to introduce Islam to my people there,” Umar Abdullah said.
