1. Dawa is the first step in a continuum from calling the non-believer to Islam all the way to Jihad fi sabilillah. If the people accept the dawa and accept Islam, Alhamdulillah, they are the guided ones, and continuous Islamic follow up instruction needs to be given to them so that they do not stray into misguidance. If the people do not accept Islam then step two comes into play.
2. Disavowal in Life and Death.
In life:
- Show enmity and hatred
- Do not follow their desires, ideologies (including their political systems)
- Withdraw from them
In Death:
- Do not ask Allah for their forgiveness
- Do not bury them with Muslims
- Prevent them from receiving and giving inheritance
3. Withdrawal and Emigration (Hijra)
We have the example of Ibrahim (as) in Surat Maryam: 48,
“I will leave you and those you invoke other than Allah…”
and we are told again in Surat al-Kahf:16
“and then you withdraw from them, and that which they worship besides Allah…”
Rasulullah sas said, “I am disavowed from every Muslim who resides amongst the backs of the polytheists.”
And we have the very clear warning from Allah swt in His Book Surat an-Nisa’ 97-100
“Verily! As for those whom the angels take while they are wronging themselves, they(the angels) say, “ in what condition were you?” and they reply, “we were weak and oppressed on the earth.” The angels say, “was not the earth of Allah spacious enough to you to emigrate therein?” Such men will find their abode in Hell – What an evil destination! Except the weak ones among men, women and children who cannot devise a pland, nor able to direct their way. He who emigrates in the Cause of Allah will find on earth many dwelling places and plenty to ive by, and whosoever leaves hishome as an emigrant unto Allah and His Messenger and death overtakes him, his reward is then surely incumbent upon Allah. And Allah is Ever forgiving, Most Merciful”
4. Jihad fi sabilillah (fighting in the way of Allah)
“…then kill the Mushrikin wherever you find them…” Surah al-Tawba: 5.
Rasulullah was ordered to fight and said, “I was commanded to fight the people until they testify that there is not deity worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah and they establish the prayer and pay the zakat. Then if they do that, they have protected their blood and their wealth from me, except in the rights of Islam and their reckoning is with Allah the Most High. (Muslim).
Jihad has been legislated since the Shari’ah of Musa (as), before that Allah destroyed the wrongdoers. Now it is commanded for the believers in order to test them in their resolve to fight in the way of Allah swt.
