Hijrah to Indonesia

Indonesia:

Islam reached Indonesia by Yemeni seafarers (from Hadhramawt). These seafarers first landed in Aceh (north Sumatra) and then spread from there. However, a lot of sufi trends where intertwined with old Hindu traditions to corrupt Islam . Those who follow the Sunnah and wipe out the old traditions are few, but they are there and very closely watched by security forces.

If I had the choice between Indonesia or returning to my non-Muslim country, I might choose my non-Muslim country, but in the hope of finding a pocket of Islamic adherence, I would try Indonesia and persevere until I found those Muslims or was deported or chose to travel to a third country. And Allah knows what is best for us.

The Islamic identity in Indonesia is very washed out. The last time I looked at statistics the Muslim population had dropped from 80% to 70%, and from that 70% a large portion were “Muslim KP”, that is “Muslim ID card”.

Currently there is a situation where high school students in Jakarta are able to buy alcohol from the minimart down the road, and they (and anyone) are doing this freely amongst other munkar and fawahish things. So maybe Jakarta is not the best option for a Muhajir on Allah’s path. Indonesia is a vast archipelago and not all of it like Jakarta so if you know the right people you may find a group on the true guidance. It would be best to research this first and set up a welcoming with such Muslims rather than randomly arrive in Indonesia and hope to survive. But remember always that Allah (swt) will always provide a Muhajir on His Path with rizq from places we would never expect.

We are now in the beginning of the Asian Century. Power is shifting in the world and Indonesia does not want to miss out on that so is developing not just in infrastructure but in social services and governance. For this reason there are plenty of jobs for professionals in various fields. You should arrange such work before arriving in Indonesia to avoid visa hassles. Also a muhajir must realise that this development is moving Indonesia away from Islam and as such could affect the iman of a muhajir.

It is important to have English to work in Indonesia, and Indonesian is very, very useful, almost essential. Arabic is also very useful in finding teaching jobs in Islamic  or Islamically sympathetic schools and colleges.

Indonesia has not been recommended highly for hijra but acceptable as a transitional destination, dawa projects and as a personal experience in a land with Muslims in it.
